Benevolent societies

"Foundations who donate their time and money to those in need"

Beginning of Benevolent Societies

Benevolent Societies were created in the 1800's as a way to convert nonbelievers. Soon their intentions changed because of the many social problems. Some of these problems were alcoholism, poverty, education, and disease. An overwhelming amount of the members were women. The unmarried women of this time went to either the church or benevolent societies.

Temperance

The Washingtonian Temperance Society was started by six alcoholics who all pledged to quit drinking. They traveled around the country lecturing the people with real life stories about abusing alcohol.  By the end of 1841 when they had reached over one million followers, they decided to take a new direction on curing intemperance.

  1. I believe that the creation of benevolent societies is an exceptional idea. The society in which we live in is full of poverty, and always has room for improvement. I believe that with these benevolent societies, many people will come together and try to create a better environment. These societies particularly appeal to me because I was once a teacher, so improving education and poverty is very near and dear to my heart!

  2. Prison Reforms
This is a very brilliant idea. If these societies work, then more converts will probably mean less people in prison, which is less chaos for us as we try to help the present inmates.

  3. We, the Shakers, believe that benevolent societies are only productive if they preach the right teachings. As firm believers in celibacy and in frequent confessions, these teachings must be incorporated, along with other main teachings of ours. If not, then these societies are a waste!

  4. Temperance Movement
These people involved in the societies are trying to do good when the alcohol abuse is getting in their way. Many of the women involved in the societies are more likely getting beat when they get home from husbands abusing alcohol. Join the movement and help these women share the faith.
