Joseph Smith and Mormons
By: Miller Townsend & Jack Boarman

During the Second Great Awakening, western New York was known as the "Burned Over District" due to the intense topic of religion. In this time of theological turmoil, Joseph Smith was born. at a young age Joseph had a strong desire to find the truth in religion. When it was time for him to be baptized into a faith, he struggled with his decision and looked to God for an answer. One day while praying in a grove of trees he claimed to have a startling experience:
This experience began Joseph's calling to be a prophet of God. He then set out to establish Christ's Church and restore authority to act only in God's name. Joseph claimed to be led by God to ancient document and was instructed to translate it into English. This document would become the Book of Mormon. Joseph's further revelations were combined into a book known as the Doctrine and Covenants which still lead his followers today.
Joseph Smith is considered to be the founder of several religious denominations as well as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Community of Christ.
Poe was an atheist. He did not believe that you could find truth in a religion. Poe thought it was of your own ability to your own limit's. Poe would not have agreed with what Smith was teaching.

We, the Shakers, believe strongly in the ideal of celibacy. It is widely known that the Mormon religion allows men to have MULTIPLE wives. This is a horrid practice that we are deeply offended by. The Mormons need to reform this practice in order for us to even consider approving their religion.Michael Clore and Davis Mitchell

ReplyDeleteWe the 2nd Great Awakening are proud to have helped the Mormon faith come along. By making people come back to church, more people had new ideas, spawning a diversity in religion. Such as the Mormons own individual ideas

Fuller: I respect the idea of religion. I feel their faith could greatly affect society. But i do not like their view on women.
