The Second Great Awakening
The Second Great awakening was a religious movement in the early 19th century. It stressed a move back to Church and led to the creation of many new denominations. One of these denominations was the Mormons. The Mormons were formed by Joseph Smith. The Mormons started in New York but faced persecution for their faith, they moved to Illinois and still faced persecution so they moved out west to Utah. The Second Great Awakening stressed the second coming of Jesus, essentially damning every person to hell for not living the proper life. One of the most successful ministers was Charles G. Finney. Finney was actually ahead of his time, fighting for social reforms, such as the abolition of slavery and the equal education for women and African Americans. He was known for his Extemporaneous preaching which is preparing beforehand for a sermon by reviewing materials and ideas but not going deep enough to actually write out the precise wording used. Refer to Abolition Movement for other details on the fight against slavery.

I, Fredrick Douglass, feel for this movement because the Mormons were persecuted and I, being a colored man was persecuted too. I also agree with Charles G. Finney's ideals, fighting for social reforms, such as the abolition of slavery and equal education for woman and African Americans -Camille Settles & Annabel Moore
ReplyDeleteTranscendentalism
ReplyDeleteWe believe our groups would work nicely together. We both have a strong belief in our movement and want our followers to proper and grow in our faith.

ReplyDeleteHenry would have agreed with the movement of the Second Great Awakening. The awakening was all about going back to church and finding yourself and your way of life again. Henry would have liked this because Transcendentalism was all about using your resources and being a spiritual person. Transcendentalism and the Second Great Awakening go hand in hand.

The Shakers; The Second Great Awakening created many new religious denominations that we view as horribly wrong. The movement also stressed Jesus Christ's Second coming, which is a total LIE! Mother Ann has already fulfilled the Second Coming!! The whole "awakening" is a vile sham!!

Joseph Smith: I, as a Mormon, pay great homage to the Second Great Awakening. It is a time period that led me closer to God and led to the great religion of Mormonism.

ReplyDeleteThe Second Great Awakening was an important time in American history. It helped create many new denominations of religion. I support the movement, because I wish to include many religious lessons throughout my schools across Massachusetts.

ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful thing you are doing trying to get people back to the church. I understand that alcohol is a big problem that effects your movement. You can be sure that us here at the temperance Movement will help in any way.

ReplyDeleteWalt Whitman: I feeleth that religion is an important factor in ones life. The attempt at the social reformation during this time was also of the utmost importance. I do not like the Mormans their leader was a weird dood.

ReplyDeleteOur members should consider meeting. We both have similar view points, and I feel that we would work very well together, seeing as both our members are very religious and predominately women. We could really benefit from your help!
Fuller: I believe that the movement is respectable. I believe that it could better society. However they could restrict my writing ideas because they are a religious based society who only allows religious writings. The Second Great Awakening may see my feminism as an uprising against the church.

This movement awoke me from my denial of Christ. Through this movement I saved countless souls and converted many to the Church. This movement made me who the well known Minister I am today
